Built for people who have never danced

Many adults who walk into their first class have never taken a dance lesson. Some think they have no rhythm, and some have not danced since a school event. The beginner class assumes nothing. It starts with how to hear the count in the music and how to take the basic step on your own.

Adults of all ages are welcome. What people have in common is that they decided to try, not their age, fitness or background. SalsaCrazy has taught San Francisco to dance since 1995, and our Monday night has run for 20+ years. THE SalsaCrazy himself teaches the Monday classes personally — it is the only class he teaches.

About the nerves

Feeling nervous before your first class is normal, and it fades quickly once the music starts. Everyone in a beginner class is learning the same thing at the same moment, so nobody is watching you.

Partners rotate during the lesson. If a move goes wrong with one partner, you get a fresh start with the next one a minute later. That rotation is a big reason the room stays relaxed.

You can also just watch the social dancing for a few songs after class. When you are ready, you will find that dancers often ask beginners to dance and keep it simple.

No partner? That is the normal way

Most people come solo. Classes are designed around rotation, so you do not need to bring anyone and you will not be left standing out. If you do come with a friend or partner, you will both meet and dance with others during the lesson as partners change.

Your first night, step by step

Monday at Neck of the Woods, 406 Clement St, San Francisco, CA 94118, in the Inner Richmond: arrive a little before 6:30 PM, get settled, and join the beginner lesson. You learn the basic alone, then with a partner, then add a first turn. Beginner salsa and beginner bachata both run that night, so you can try both. The dance party follows.

Friday at Space 550, 550 Barneveld Ave, San Francisco, CA 94124: doors open at 7:45 PM, Beginning Bachata is at 8:00 PM and Beginning Salsa at 8:45 PM. Friday is 21+, with free street parking and dancing until 1:30 AM.

Salsa or bachata first?

Bachata is a 4-count dance with a side-to-side basic and a tap on 4. It is slower and usually easier on the first night. Salsa is an 8-count dance, stepped on 1-2-3 and 5-6-7, danced On1 in most of San Francisco. It builds turning and lead/follow skills faster. You do not have to choose: on Mondays you can take both.

Common first-night mistakes

Arriving late is the big one, because the basic is taught first and everything builds on it. The second is grippy shoes: rubber sneakers stick to the floor when you turn, so choose a smooth sole that stays on your foot. The third is trying to memorise everything. Focus on timing and the basic, and the rest comes with repetition.

Expect real steps in the first class. Most people feel comfortable at a social after one 4-week series and confident after two or three. One class a week is enough.
