Two ways to take lessons

There are two ways to take Monday lessons at Neck of the Woods, 406 Clement St, San Francisco, CA 94118, in the Inner Richmond. The first is weekly: come to a Monday class, learn that night's material, then stay for the dance party. It is the easiest way to find out whether you like salsa or bachata.

The second is the 4-Week Progressive Series. A new series starts on the first Monday of each month and each week builds on the last, so you move forward instead of repeating the basics. November 2026 is a 5-week series starting Monday, November 2.

Fridays offer another lesson night at Space 550, 550 Barneveld Ave: Beginning Bachata at 8:00 PM, Beginning Salsa at 8:45 PM and Intermediate Bachata at 9:00 PM, followed by social dancing until 1:30 AM. Friday is 21+.

Weekly drop-in or series: how to decide

Choose a weekly class if your schedule changes from week to week, if you are trying partner dance for the first time, or if you want to compare salsa and bachata before committing.

Choose the series if you already know you want to learn, and you would like the same group and a plan that adds up. Because the weeks connect, people in a series tend to feel ready for social dancing sooner.

Both routes use the same teaching approach. THE SalsaCrazy himself teaches the Monday classes personally — it is the only class he teaches.

What you will learn, week by week

Exact lesson plans change, so this is the general shape rather than a fixed syllabus. Week one is about timing and the basic step: counting the music, finding the 1, and moving with a partner without losing the count.

Week two adds turns and how a lead and a follow communicate through the hands and frame. The basic should start to feel automatic, which frees attention for your partner.

Week three joins steps into short sequences, so you can keep dancing through a phrase of music instead of stopping after each move. Week four reviews and connects everything, with the social floor in mind. By the end, the goal is that you can walk onto a social floor and dance a whole song with someone new.

Salsa and bachata basics in plain words

Salsa is counted in eight. You step on 1-2-3 and 5-6-7 and pause on 4 and 8. Dancing on 1 (On1) is the main San Francisco style, and there is also an On2 community.

Bachata is counted in four. The basic moves side to side with a tap on 4. It is slower and usually feels easier on the first night, while salsa builds turning and lead/follow skills faster.

Getting the most out of each lesson

Arrive on time, because the basic comes first and everything else builds on it. Wear something you can move in and smooth-soled shoes that stay on your feet. Do not try to memorise every move: focus on timing and connection, and the patterns will follow.

One class a week is enough. Most people learn real steps in the first class, feel comfortable at a social after one series, and feel confident after two or three. Staying for the dance party after class is the fastest way to lock in what you learned.
