Latin Dance Classes in San Francisco: Salsa, Bachata & Where to Start
Latin dance classes in San Francisco usually begin with salsa or bachata, the two social dances you will meet on almost every Latin night. SalsaCrazy teaches both for beginners every Monday from 6:30 PM at 406 Clement St, and on Fridays at Space 550.

Why start with salsa and bachata
"Latin dance" covers many styles, but at Bay Area social nights two of them fill the floor: salsa and bachata. Learning them first means that when you go out, you can dance most of the songs the DJ plays.
SalsaCrazy focuses on exactly these two. We have taught San Francisco to dance since 1995, more than 30 years, and our Monday night has run for 20+ years. THE SalsaCrazy himself teaches the Monday classes personally — it is the only class he teaches.
Salsa explained
Salsa is an 8-count dance. You step on 1-2-3, pause on 4, step on 5-6-7 and pause on 8. Starting the forward break on 1 is called On1, and it is the main style in San Francisco. The city also has an On2 community, which breaks on 2.
Salsa music is fast and the dance uses a lot of turns, so it builds lead-and-follow and turning skills faster than bachata. Most dancers find it more challenging at first, and very rewarding once the basic clicks.
Bachata explained
Bachata is a 4-count dance. The basic moves side to side, three steps and a tap on 4. The music is usually slower, so most people find bachata easier on the first night and feel like they are really dancing within minutes.
A good beginner plan is to take both. Bachata gives you quick confidence, and salsa develops your turns and connection. On Mondays both beginner classes run on the same night.
Where to start this week
Monday: Neck of the Woods, 406 Clement St, San Francisco, CA 94118, in the Inner Richmond. Beginner salsa and beginner bachata start from 6:30 PM, then the dance party. A 4-Week Progressive Series starts on the first Monday of each month. November 2026 is a 5-week series starting Monday, November 2.
Friday: Space 550, 550 Barneveld Ave, San Francisco, CA 94124. Doors open at 7:45 PM, Beginning Bachata is at 8:00 PM, Beginning Salsa at 8:45 PM and Intermediate Bachata at 9:00 PM, with dancing until 1:30 AM. Friday is 21+ with free street parking.
No partner or experience is needed. Most people come solo, and partners rotate during the lesson.
What to wear and what to expect
Wear anything you can move in. Choose smooth-soled shoes that stay on your feet, because grippy soles make turns hard. Expect real steps in the first class. Most people feel comfortable at a social after one 4-week series and confident after two or three.
Beyond our classes

San Francisco venues include Cigar Bar & Grill (Jackson Square), Roccapulco (Mission), El Valenciano (Mission) and The Ramp (Dogpatch, Salsa Saturdays). For current dates, sfdance.com has the full Bay Area calendar, and dancesanfrancisco.com covers where to dance in SF.
