A night out that teaches you something

A dance class is one of the easiest date nights to plan. You learn something new together, then put it to use at the dance party straight after. Salsa and bachata are partner dances, so you learn how a lead and a follow communicate, which many couples enjoy working on together.

SalsaCrazy has taught San Francisco to dance since 1995. Our Monday night has run for 20+ years. THE SalsaCrazy himself teaches the Monday classes personally — it is the only class he teaches.

How partner rotation works

Our group classes use partner rotation. During the lesson, partners change every so often, so each person practises with several people. Most people who attend come solo, and rotation is how the class keeps everyone dancing.

For couples, rotation helps more than it might seem. A lead learns whether a signal is clear when it works with different follows. A follow learns to respond to the lead rather than to one familiar habit. When you dance together again at the social, both of you have improved.

If you have questions about rotation before you book, call or text 415-309-1284 or email info@dancesf.com.

Where couples can learn together

Mondays: Neck of the Woods, 406 Clement St, San Francisco, CA 94118, in the Inner Richmond. Beginner salsa and beginner bachata start from 6:30 PM, followed by a dance party. This is the best choice for a class-first evening.

Fridays: Space 550, 550 Barneveld Ave, San Francisco, CA 94124. Beginning Bachata is at 8:00 PM, Beginning Salsa at 8:45 PM and Intermediate Bachata at 9:00 PM, then dancing until 1:30 AM in two rooms. Friday is 21+ with free street parking, a good fit for a later night out.

Salsa or bachata as a couple

Bachata is a 4-count dance with a side-to-side basic and a tap on 4. It is slower and usually easier on the first night, and it gives couples something they can dance together quickly. Salsa is an 8-count dance stepped on 1-2-3 and 5-6-7 (On1). It builds turning and lead/follow skills faster. On Mondays you can try both in one evening.

Making progress together

The 4-Week Progressive Series is ideal for couples who want a shared goal. A new series starts on the first Monday of each month and each week builds on the last. November 2026 is a 5-week series starting Monday, November 2.

Expect real steps in the first class. Most people feel comfortable at a social after one series and confident after two or three. One class a week is enough, and practising a basic together in the kitchen helps too.

Wear anything you can move in, with smooth-soled shoes that stay on your feet.
