What we teach
We teach two partner dances: salsa and bachata. They are the two styles you will hear most at Latin social nights around the Bay Area, and they are the two styles that get a complete beginner dancing with other people fastest.
Salsa is an 8-count dance. You step on 1-2-3, pause, then step on 5-6-7. That timing is called On1, and it is what most San Francisco dancers use, although the city also has an On2 community. Bachata is a 4-count dance with a side-to-side basic and a tap on 4. It is slower, and most people find it easier on their first night.
Salsa tends to build turning and leading-and-following skills faster, because the music is quicker and the patterns travel more. Many people learn both, and on Mondays you can try both in the same evening.
Where and when classes happen
SalsaCrazy is a salsa and bachata dance studio with multiple locations in San Francisco. Rather than one storefront, classes happen at our venues. Mondays are at Neck of the Woods, 406 Clement St, San Francisco, CA 94118, in the Inner Richmond. Beginner salsa and beginner bachata start from 6:30 PM, and a dance party follows the lessons.
Fridays are at Space 550, 550 Barneveld Ave, San Francisco, CA 94124. Doors open at 7:45 PM. Beginning Bachata is at 8:00 PM, Beginning Salsa at 8:45 PM and Intermediate Bachata at 9:00 PM, then dancing goes until 1:30 AM. Friday is 21+, and there is free street parking.
SalsaCrazy has taught San Francisco to dance since 1995, more than 30 years. The Monday night has been running for 20+ years. THE SalsaCrazy himself teaches the Monday classes personally — it is the only class he teaches.
What a first class is like
You do not need to bring anyone. Most people come solo, and partners rotate during the lesson, so you dance with many people over the evening. Rotation is how a class with mixed experience and mixed arrivals keeps everyone practising.
A first class begins with the basic step. You learn the footwork on your own first, then take it to a partner, then add a simple turn or variation once the basic feels steady. You will leave with real steps from the first class, not just warm-up drills.
After the lesson comes the social dancing. That is where you try what you learned to real music. Nobody expects a beginner to look polished, and the more confident dancers in the room were beginners at this same kind of night.
How to choose Monday or Friday
Choose Monday if you want a class-first evening, the option of learning salsa and bachata in one night, and the 4-Week Progressive Series. A new series starts on the first Monday of each month, and each week builds on the last. November 2026 is a 5-week series starting Monday, November 2.
Choose Friday if you prefer a later start, a nightclub setting with two rooms, and a social that runs into the early morning. Friday has a beginner bachata lesson and a beginner salsa lesson, plus an intermediate bachata class in the back room. Remember it is 21+.
Many regulars do both: Monday to learn, Friday to dance. One class a week is enough to make steady progress.
What to wear and how fast you will progress
Wear anything you can move in. For shoes, choose a smooth sole that stays on your feet: sneakers with grippy rubber make turning hard, and sandals or loose slip-ons can come off.
Here is what to expect. You get real steps in the first class. After one 4-week series most people feel comfortable at a social. After two or three series most people feel confident.
Tickets and next steps
Monday tickets are at salsabachatamondays.com and Friday tickets are at dancefridays.fun. For the Monday party alone, buying ahead saves money: $10 in advance against $20 at the door. Series prices also rise as the start date gets closer, so earlier is better.
If you live outside the city, our city pages explain how to plan the trip from Oakland, Berkeley, the East Bay, San Jose, the Peninsula and Marin. For every other dance night in the region, the full Bay Area calendar is at sfdance.com, and dancesanfrancisco.com covers where to dance in SF. Questions?
