A Guide to the San Francisco Salsa and Bachata Scene

5 min read

San Francisco's salsa and bachata scene is built around recurring weekly nights. Instead of hunting for one-off events, dancers here learn the calendar: a night in the Inner Richmond, a night in the Bayview, a Saturday in the Mission. Once you know the rhythm of the week, you always have somewhere to dance.

DanceCrazy Productions has been part of that calendar for 30+ years, and SalsaCrazy Mondays has been running for over 20 of them. Across our Eventbrite organiser account we have hosted more than 1,400 events attended by over 105,400 people.

The shape of a typical night

Almost every beginner-friendly night in the city follows the same structure: a class first, then open social dancing. The class gives newcomers enough vocabulary to survive the floor; the social afterwards is where it becomes real dancing rather than drills.

You do not need a partner. Classes rotate partners so everyone dances with everyone, which is also the fastest way to learn to lead or follow anyone rather than just one person.

Where we dance

SalsaCrazy Mondays runs at Neck of the Woods, 406 Clement St in the Inner Richmond, with doors at 6:30 PM, the class at 7:00 PM and social dancing after.

Dance Fridays takes over Space 550 at 550 Barneveld Ave: doors at 7:45 PM, beginning bachata at 8:00, beginning salsa at 8:45, intermediate bachata at 9:00, then social dancing from 9:30 PM until 1:30 AM.

SalsaCrazy Saturday runs at The Verdi Club, 2424 Mariposa St in the Mission.

Starting out

Monday is the gentlest entry point. It is early, the class is aimed at people who have never danced, and the room is small enough that you will recognise faces by your second week. Booking in advance is $10 rather than $20 at the door, so the cheapest week to start is the one you plan ahead for.
